There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the border from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling hall gaming is not legal. Eight gambling dens are based in a relatively tiny location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent spot, a three to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing capital acquired from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to more than 12.5 million, and there are a couple of controls constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; still, financial sources are ambiguous. The borders are ceremoniously open from 09:00 to 17:00, and although visas are supposedly necessary to cross, there are ways around this, as is real of most borders.

The first Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored boat gambling den, contains one hundred and fifty slot machines and 60 tables. The Naga casino never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of chemin de fer, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of 150 slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machine games and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and sixty six of the familiar table games, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international resort and hotel compound that contains numerous conveniences accompanying the gambling den, which houses 10,000 square feet of 130 slots and 88 gaming tables.
